How to Use the Blue Letter Bible CD
What is in the Blue Letter Bible?

The Blue Letter Bible (BLB) is an internet site on the World Wide Web. It's internet address is https://www.blueletterbible.org. What you are viewing here is a CD version of the Blue Letter Bible (for software requirements and recommendations, please see our brief explanation). The CD and the website are slightly different for a few primary reasons:

The website is based on dynamic content that is added to on a periodic basis,

CD technology requires certain “look and feel” adjustments,

Is limited because of size requirements.

The Blue Letter Bible contains as it's primary Bible: an 18th century edition of the "King James Version" (for more information on why the KJV see this page). 7 Additional versions / translations are available on a verse by verse basis as explained below. We have added some study tools to this:

  1. Word and phrase search tools

  2. The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (TSK) is essentially a list of 311,000 cross-references covering each verse of the Bible.

  3. Greek and Hebrew versions of the text using original language typography—this is helpful for word study and translation.

  4. Concordance listings for most words showing a list of all verses in which a given word occurs—this is available both for the English translation and for the original language.

  5. Lexicon definitions for the original language and a listing showing the different ways in which specific words have been translated into English and giving a pronunciation guide.

  6. Cross reference of Biblical words into six different study guides—including: Hitchcock's Topical Analysis Nave's Topical Bible, Torrey's Topical Bible, Easton's Bible Dictionary, Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary, and the BLB Thematic Subject Guide. The internet version of the Blue Letter Bible also includes Vine's Expository Dictionary, which was not included on this CD because of copyright issues.

  7. Text commentaries for each verse in the Bible, from sources both old (such as Matthew Henry) and modern (through "conservative" Bible-believing Pastors and Commentators). The internet version of the Blue Letter Bible also includes audio commentaries, which were not included on this CD because of size requirements.

  8. Maps and images—which we pray will help the Body study God's Word.
How do you use all the above features?

The basic idea is that ALL the features described above are available as you read the Blue Letter Bible, by clicking various buttons. For almost every verse in the Blue Letter Bible, there are at least three things you can do:

  1. Click on the button at the far left to see suggested scriptures that relate to the verse. See our tutorial for more information regarding the usage of this feature.

  2. Click on the button for Greek/Hebrew and concordance/lexicon. The verse will be re-displayed along with the Greek/Hebrew text. Click on any English word within the table to see search results. You will see how the English word is used in the KJV translation, as well as dictionary entries discussing that word. Or, click on the Strong's number next to the English word. It will give you a concordance of the usage of the original language word, and a lexicon entry including a pronunciation guide. See our tutorial for more information regarding the usage of this feature.

  3. Click on the button for a list of all text commentaries relating to the selected verse. This is the same action as clicking on the actual Bible verse reference (such as Jhn 3:16)

You may browse through this list, choose one, then click on the View Commentary button which appears. A new page displaying your choice will then appear. After viewing to your choice, you may go back to the menu window, and make another choice! See our tutorial for more information regarding the usage of this feature.

  4. Click on the button for a link to images or maps that pertain to the chosen passage—this feature will not be available for all verses. See our tutorial for more information regarding the usage of this feature.

  5. Click on the button for different versions / translations—including Webster's, Young's, Darby's, American Standard Version, Hebrew Names Version, Revised Standard Version, and the Vulgate. See our tutorial for more information regarding the usage of this feature.

  6. Click on the button for a list of dictionary entries pertaining to the selected verse. See our tutorial for more information regarding the usage of this feature.

What search features are available?

There are a few search features available on the BLB-CD. The search features are available by clicking on the Search button in the left navigational bar, to go to the Search Tools page. Here is a quick summary of the features.

  1. The Word Search feature allows you to type in a word, click the Search button, and a window will appear that provides search results for every place in the KJV that word appears. Each Biblical reference is clickable to view the verse text. Note, this tool is also available directly on the home page.

  2. The Strong's Search will search for a specific Strong's number in either the Hebrew or Greek. Search results show lexicon information, and a concordance of every occurrence of the original language word related to that Strong's number.

  3. The Detailed Word Search section, that provides a listing of all the words in the five dictionaries that are included on the BLB-CD.
Are there any other study tools?

In addition to all the above, there are additional study tools, charts, and daily devotionals!

  1. Listed in the Featured Items on the home page, you will see a link to the Study Aids and Charts section. This page provides several features including a harmony of the Gospels, listings of our Lord's miracles and His parables, a special Passover and Resurrection section, and much, much more!

  2. The Devotional section has two daily devotionals for your use.
Each devotional has a full scripture index available.
Can I copy the BLB-CD to my hard drive?

The BLB-CD can be transferred to your hard drive for use without the CD. Go to this tutorial page to view detailed instructions.
